THE ADVENTURES OF A WEDDING PARTY
An extraordinary story of the vicissitudes of a wedding party comes from Cumberland. The marriage of Miss Mabel Snelus, youngest daughter of Major Snelus, of Ennerdale Hall, Frisington, with Mr John Howes, mining engineer, of Havercroft, should been at two o'clock on Wednesday afternoon, and the bridal party of fourteen persons proseeded to Arlecdon Church to assist at the ceremony. The Rev .Alfred Churwin, of Harrington, got as far as the house of the curate, the Rev H. Sugden, where he became snow blocked. The bridegroom started from his residence in a severe snow storm, but failing to make progress he substituted rugs for a saddle, and essayed to reach the church, but was completely weather bound. Some of the snowdrifts were 16ft. deep, and the hedges and roads were lost to view. The party of 14 had meanwhile gained the church unknown to the bridegroom, who gave up the attempt after three gallant efforts. The bridal party and the bride were snowed up in the church, where they had to pass the night, provisions and wraps having with difficulty been conveyed to them by Messrs Percy and George Snelus. The couple were married at one o'clock: yesterday afternoon by Mr Sugden, but a road from the church had to be carved by 200 labourers [8]
