Notes |
- Possibly used to live at 22 Hansard Road, Norwich - see Kelly's directories for 1930s/40s
Was brought up by his grandmother, Elizabeth, because of his mother's death. Keen on fishing and cycling. Good swimmer
Originally apprenticed at Laurence, Scott & Electromotors and worked on their engine test bed. Had an accident and crushed his finger.
Richard moved to Chingford because his father closed down Howes Brothers Shoes in Norwich. At that time, none of the other shoe manufacturers in the city would hire him for fear that they would lose proprietary knowledge. So he had to move away. Worked for a shoe factory in Hackney. He came back when his father bought Ward Shoe Company
Was a pattern cutter and designer of shoes - then take to stores and sell the deisgns - could go into any department and tell them what to do. Bought half of the yard from Huntons. Exported to HK, Singapore, Macy's in NY - slippers to Sammy Davis jr. Slippers with foxheads (sold to Bowhill & Elliott). Colin Chapman of Lotus Cars asked for light shoe for racing car drivers. When on a cruise, met Peter Eggleton (ballroom dancer) who also wanted lightweight shoes.
Very keen on international expansion. Ran out of capital with exchange controls. Unable to get paid for exports. Start-Rite bought Ward Shoe Co for its export markets.
Some of Ward Shoe Company archives on loan to Bridewell Museum in Norwich. Can be seen by calling Mr Renton on +44-1603-629127 / 615975

Death of man who heeled the stars
Richard Howes, acclaimed craftsman and personality in the Norwich shoe trade for more than 50 years, has died aged 89.
Mr Howes, of Thieves Lane, Salhouse, designed shoes for stars including Sammy Davis Jr, and Colin Chapman's Lotus racing team.
He entered the shoe industry with his family frim, Howes Brothers, and after a spell in London he took charge of the Ward Shoe Company in Magdalen Street, Norwich.
In 1957, the company became part of the Start-Rite group and Mr Howes continued as managing director until retiring in 1973.
Mr Howes served as chairman of the Norwich branch of the British Boot and Shoe Institute.
His hobbies were gardening and cycling, and he was a founder member of the Norwich Cycling Club.
He leaves three children - Gill, Jacqueline and Derek (sic). Wife Maisie died in 1979.
