Notes |
- We are grateful to Terry Wadsley for providing the following extract from the book "No More Strangers" A record of Peterborough men killed during World War One by David Gray
[Whilst this report states thar Albert died on 26 November 1915, the official records of "British Army WW1 Medal Rolls Index Cards 1914 - 1920" clearly shows "K in A 26 10 15" [Killed in Action 26th October 1915]].
P33. JANUARY 22nd 1916
Private Albert Howes, 1st Lancashire Fusiliers, brother of Mrs Ashpool, Bright Street, Peterborough, has been killed in Gallipoli, he was previously wounded at Mons.
P35. MARCH 4th 1916
Mrs. D. Ashpool of 12 Bright Street, Peterborough, has received a letter from Sgt. J. W. Ibbott, 1st Lacashire Fusiliers, whose home is in Alma Road, Peterborough, giving details of how her brother, Private Howes met his death at Gallipoli. He was killed on the morning of November 26th, being hit in the stomach by a piece of shrapnel. It appears there had been a heavy fall of rain which had flooded the trenches and the men had to leave them and go to open ground. Howes had just been to fetch water to make some tea, and while handing it down he was hit. "I can tell you" said Sgt Abbott, "that when I got there a few days afterwards and heard that he had been killed, I had to have a good cry. I had been thinking of what it would be to be together again, after being parted from one another for so long, and knowing that he had no real mates from his own town."
