    • Suckling was placed in Norwich castle gaol for insolvency in 1816. See copy of his petition notice of 26 Feb 1816

      Note too that the recorded name of Benjamin comes from his son's first marriage and we believe it to be incorrect. See notes under Benjamin's record

      The following notes are taken, with permission, from www.antiqueclocksales.co.uk: "The unusually named maker Suckling Howes' recorded working dates are 1787 - 1816 but clockmakers often worked either side of their recorded dates. It is believed that the 1787 date above was taken from his advert in the Ipswich Journal dated 22 December for a Journeyman clockmaker.

      "In 1790 a William Grant was 'transported' for stealing two watches from him. In 1816 he was an insolvent debtor in Norwich Castle : 'Notice of his confinement in HM Gaol' was reported in the Norfolk Chronicle / Norfolk Gazette dated March 1816, which is probably where the 1816 date came from."
