1958 , Farnborough
Mr. R.E. Howes
Twenty-seven years service in the army was remembered at the funeral of Mr Reginald Ernest Howes, 8 Netley Street, Farnborough, when semi-military honours were given and a bugler sounded "Last Post" at Ship Lane Cemetery on Monday. Mr Howes, who died in hospital, was 61 and was the head steward at the R.A.F. Officers Mess, Farnborough. Earlier, he served in the Air Ministry Constabulary at the R.A.F., and he ended his military service in 1942 with the rank of Warrant Officer Class 1. He joined the Northumberland Fusiliers and transferred to the Coldstream Guards before moving to the Military Police Staff Corps, with whom he served at the "Glasshouse", the Aldershot military prison. In the Second World War he went to France with the British Services and returned through Dunkirk, and he was at Kent and Carrickfergus later. He was a member of the Coldstream Association, and the Farnborough Working Men's club and the R.A.O.B., and he leaves a widow, a son who serves in the Scots Guards, a daughter in Canada and another daughter in Australia. The requiem mass at the Church of Our Lady, Help of Christians was solemised by the Rev. W. Marrs

Personal note from grandson, Alan Howe
Reginald Howes led a blighted, but interesting life. He timed it badly by being of age for the start of the First World War, and still fit and young enough to serve out part of the Second. He was a disciplined and conservative fellow - but apparently hard on the "glasshouse" prisoners. It was always a difficult role and it made him perhaps the most hated man in Aldershot.
Briefly, en route to nearby Mytchett village in Surrey in 1941, Rudolph Hess passed through the glasshouse.
My mother arrived in Australia in August 1958 to the news that Reginald had died while then they were three days out of Southampton. It was a dreadful start to a life in a new country. Unfortunately, I have no memories of that generation; I left England as an 18-month-old. I can recall that my mother once bumped in to some young English men in Australia who had served time in the glasshouse. Mum fessed up. "That bastard!" they said.
The night before Reginald was evacuated from Dunkirk he returned to the village and - in the firm belief that it would be overrun by Germans within hours - stole the wooden cross and candlesticks from the local Catholic church. He had converted to Catholicism to marry my Irish Catholic grandmother. The cross and candle sticks are still in the family's possession.
