MRS. SETH B. HOWES DIES IN HER 86TH YEAR FOLLOWING A SHORT ILLNESS
Native of England and Resident Here Sixty Years. Funeral at St. Andrews Church Tuesday. ---
Mrs. Amy Mozley Howes, widow of Seth Benedict Howes, died Sunday morning. June 5, 1927, at "The Gables," Turk Hill. --- Although in her 86th year, Mrs. Howes was active until about two weeks ago when she became confined to her room, overcome by the infirmities of age, especially a weak heart. --- July 19, 1841, she was born in London, the daughter of Aaron and Maria Warner Mozley. On Jan. 20, 1861, she married Mr. Howes in London and came to America with him in 1864. Mr. and Mrs. Howes' first permanent home in Brewster was "Stonehenge," a beautiful house of English pattern with large grounds at Southeast Center near this village. About the time of the building of the Sodom reservoir near Stonehenge, Mr. Howes built "Morningthorpe" on Turk Hill, another house of distinction, the interior woodwork of which is seldom equaled. This home with its view of Putnam county country, of which they were so fond, Mr. and Mrs. Howes enjoyed for many years. Morningthorpe is now occupied by the family of the late Rev. Reuben W. Howes, a nephew of Seth B. Howes. --- Mr. and Mrs. Howes travelled in Europe and spent many winters there where Mr. Howes had large real estate investments. One of their dates of arrival at Chicago was on the day of the great Chicago fire. Mr. and Mrs. Howes had left their trunks in the Union Station and with hand-baggage only had taken room. The Union Station and its contents burned. --- No one could have been a more constant and loyal friend of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church than Mrs. Howes. She was one of the early members when the church was a wooden structure and she saw this building replaced by the present beautifully designed stone edifice, the gift of Mr. Howes, an edifice made more beautiful by its impressive chancel window, through which shines the morning sun. --- She lived her religion and generous acts and kind deeds were many and simplicity was in her manner and in her acts. Of the District Nursing Association, she was a sustaining member and generous supporter. To many charities she gave freely. --- Her nearest surviving relatives are Mrs. Lily Forebaugh, of this village; Mrs. Alice Phillips and Mrs. Amelia Alvarez, of Brixton, England; Mrs. Flora Dossie and Mrs. Clementina Mozley, of Brighton, England, nieces and William O. Mozley of Brighton, England and Henry Albert Jee of Brixton, nephews. Mrs Ruhamah M. Heartfield, of this village, widow of Rev. Frank Heartfield through a step daughther, was like a daughter to Mrs. Howes and made here home with Mrs. Howes for several years. Dear also to Mrs. Howes were the six children of Mr. and Mrs. Heartfield. The late Mrs. Egbert Howes was a niece, her daughters, Lydia Hine and Bertha Ives of the village being grand nieces. --- Her funeral was held at St Andrew's Church, Tuesday, at 2 o'clock, the rector, Rev. Frederick A. Coleman and the Rev. Wm. H. Meldran, of Christ Church, of Patterson, officiating. The were "Lead Kindly Light" and "Nearer My God to Thee." The bearers were Wm. F. Masher, George N. Wise, August Holt, Harry M. Reynolds, Edward D. Stannard, Arthur G. Strand, Alvah B. Townsend and Harry H. Wells. On that beautiful June afternoon, she was laid to rest in the Howes mausoleum at Milltown cemetery.

GIFT OF DIAMOND TO YORK MINSTER - AMERICAN WOMAN'S LEGACY
An unusual gift of great value to York Minster at the time of the 1,300th anniversary celebrations in the summer has just been made public. The donor was an American lady, Mrs Howes, of Brewster, New York State, who has since died, and the gift was made on her behalf by her niece, Miss Forepaugh, who visited the Minster authorities and made the offer. An assessor was present at the interview and found the diamond was 32 carats, and gave an estimate of the value which surprised the authorities.
In accordance with the wish of Mrs Howes that the diamond might be used in some tangible form, she also presented a chalice and paten of silver-gilt, which were purchased from a York goldsmith, who set the diamond in the chalice. The Minster authorities had little information about Mrs Howes, who, it has since transpired, was the widow of a partner in the American circus of Howes and Cushing, and was at one time an equestrienne and travelled all over America with the circus, buying land in various States, which was the foundation of her fortune. She was a devoted churchgoer, and belonged to a family which hailed from the Norwich district.
Comment:
1) the Norwich connection is now known to be incorrect, or at least unproven
2) the article failed to mention that the good lady was actually English by origin
3) a 32ct diamond recently sold for $7.7m!
