    Notes
    • We suspect this is the Benjamin who was referred to in the following articles from the Stamford Mercury by correspondent John Crawshaw:

      21 February 1845
A Large and superior Block of FREESTONE has been lately raised by Mr BENJ. HOWES, at his quarry, KING'S CLIFFE, having in its dimensions the extraordinary number of 253 Feet, Cubic Measure

      19 September 1845
      KING'S CLIFFE QUARRY
BENJ. HOWES begs to remind Railway Contractors, Builders, Gravestone-cutters, and others, of the superior quality of STONE which is now for Sale at his Quarry. This Stone has been used and approved for many years past, and has been extensively used on the line of the Peterborough and Blisworth Railway; it posesses in an eminent degree the three qualities of being easily worked, resisting the most intense frost and of bearing the greatest pressure, Lying near the surface, the Proprietor is enabled to compete in price with any Quarry in this neighbourhood; it can be delivered by land-carriage in Blocks of any size that would be required, at a charge of one half-penny per cubic foot per mile in addition to the usual price at the Quarry.
      King's Cliffe, Sept 17, 1845

I love the reference to the Proprietor lying near the surface; it shows that poor grammar is not just a modern invention!
