Notes |
- SMALL CAUTION: in the 1911 census, Susan states that she has had 6 children, of whom 4 are still alive. Until we found Edward's link to her in his Army service record, we could only identify five children from the GRO index.
On the final sheet of his service record, Edward is noted to have a mother named Susan and a younger brother named Benjamin in the same house. His mothers address is stated to be 11 Barden Street, off the Commercial Road. This fits with 11 Varden street which was Susan Dearman's actual address.
Edward also states that his father was dead by 1906. Benjamin died in 1894
Those are the primary arguments for believing that Edward was her son. Another which could be for or against, is that one place where he is said to be born is Bow.
Arguments against, or at least neutral:
1) not being able to find a birth or baptism record for Edward
2) his mis-naming his father as Thomas Edward on his first marriage record. Edward was surely old enough to have known the real name?
3) assuming the dates we have for Edward's birth are correct, his birth was very close to that of his next younger sister. a year of birth of 1875 would fit better.
4) the Farnham place of birth doesn't feel likely given the rest of the family's residences.
It might be possible that Edward was the child of a relative taken in by Benjamin and Susan, or that he wasn't a family member at all. But to us the weight of the pros outweighs that of the cons.
