THE SALVATION ARMY. - Yesterday, before the Norwich magistrates, Thomas Howes, 19, was charged with assaulting Henry Standing, of 93 Waterloo Road, a captain in the Salvation Army. The complainant stated that on Saturday evening, the Norwich division of the Salvation Army formed a ring near St. Augustine's Gates. The defendant pushed people aside and made his way through the centre of the ring. The complainant followed the defendant and said to him, "You ought not to have done that; please do not do it again." The defendant then turned around and struck the complainant two blows on the head. The complainant denied that he had struck the defendant, or lost his temper. He was getting used to being struck by people. The magistrates fined the defendant 10s and costs, the alternative being seven days imprisonment. As the defendant did not pay the fine, he was removed to the cells. The chairman told the complainant that he had no right to form a ring, as he termed it, in a roadway.
Norwich Mercury - 10 August 1887
Thomas Howes, Old Brew Yard, St Martin at Oak, was summoned by Henry Standing, 93 Waterloo Road, captain of the Salvation Army at the Barracks, situate on that road, for assaulting him on the 8th inst. Complainant said that on the evening in question an outside meeting was being held on the roadway near St Augustine's Schools, a ring being formed, when defendant walked through, instead of round the ring. Witness went up to the lad, put his hand on his shoulder and said, "You oughn't to have done that. Don't do it again." Thereupon the defendant struck him twice on the head, knocking his hat to the ground. Defendant was "coming for" him again when the complainant up with his hands, and seeing defendant, put him on the ground for the purpose of "cooling him down". In defence, Howes said that the "captain"struck him first and tore the sleeve of his coat. The complainant denied and said the garment was damaged while defendant was struggling with the crowd in his attempts to come at complainant again. Mr REEVE thought that (TO BE COMPLETED)

Mobbing the police - Norwich Mercury February 4, 1891
Thomas Howes, a Private in the C Company of the 4th Battallion Norfolk Regiment, stationed on Mousehold, was charged with being drunk and disorderly, with using obscene language and with assaulting the police whilst in the execution of their duty in London Street on Saturday night (that would be: Jan 31, 1891). PC Westwood said that the prisoner, besides creating a disturbance, knocked a civilian down and refused to go away. Witness and several other constables accordingly apprehended him, when he began to struggle violently, and eventually before he could be got to the Police Station, the officers had to blow their whistles for assistance against the mob of roughs who had gathered round, hooting and jostling them and who were doing their utmost to get the prisoner out of custody. In the struggle, prisoner slashed at Westwood's face with his cane, and two or three times kicked him on the right side of his body. But for his watch and the leather belt of his lamp, the blows would have done him great injury; and, as it was, the pain he suffered was so great that he could hardly endure lying down. Colour-Sergeant Cash said the prisoner bore a very fair character in his regiment, in which he enlisted on the 8th of last month The Bench is sentencing prisoner to four months' imprisonment, remarked on the brutality of the assault, and the bad record he already bore in the police books, including several previous convictions for assaults on the police.
