Jimmie Howes, of South Carthage, died, at the age of 87, at 12:01 p.m. Thursday afternoon, March 19, 2009, in the emergency room at Riverview Regional Medical Center in Carthage of heart failure. She became gravely ill moments earlier at Smith County Health Care Center, where she had made her home since December 27, 2006. Bro. Scott Nesbitt officiated at the 3:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon, March 22nd funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Smith County Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Howes was born Jimmie Annual Gillispie in Smith County on June 17, 1921, and was one of five children of the late William Robert Gillispie and Mattie Betty Parker Gillispie. Two brothers preceded her in death, William Horace Gillispie, who died July 19, 1995, at the age of 67, and Donald Gillispie, and an infant sister, Floye Joyce Gillispie and another sister, Julia Faye Silcox, who died October 7, 2005, at the age of 71. She was first married to Luther Hewitt, who was the father of her late son and Mr. Hewitt died April 27, 1941. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Hewitt, who died at birth on July 26, 1940, and by her son, Bobby N. Hewitt, who died in July 9, 2008, and by her daughter-in-law, Helen Hewitt, who died March 15, 2008. On January 29, 1943, she was married to Chester Allen Howes of Taylor, Iowa, who preceded her in death on December 26, 1984, at the age of 74. Mrs. Howes retired from the Sears Drapery Factory in Indianapolis in 1976 and she and Mr. Howes returned to her native Smith County. She was a member of the East Carthage Missionary Baptist Church, She is survived by her grandson, Jeff Hewitt and his wife, ReneƩ of Indianapolis, Indiana and her caregivers, Dolores and Terry Bowman of Horseshoe Bend community; three great-grandchildren.
