    • With kind thanks to the British Fairground & Circus Archive, I reproduce the note they sent to me about Barbara:
      Animal trainer, Barbara Dorothy, born on 1 November 1933, in South Yardly, Birmingham, the daughter of Sydney and Jessie Howes. Sister of Gordon (born 1939). Brought up with her family on Chapmans, then on the Roberts Brothers' circus. First appeared in 1949, with her lion taming father, at Don Ross's Imperial stage circus, presenting six liberty ponies. Said to have a flair for handling lions and to be a capable wire walker. Appeared with her father in 1950 with Roberts Brothers's circus at New Brighton Tower Zoo, and in 1951 with Roberts Brothers' stage circus. Said to be age 17 in December 1951, "Great Britains youngest girl animal trainer". With her father at Robert Brothers' Stage circus, touring in 1951-52. Assisted her father in the presentation of various animal acts, her favourites the chimpanzees. Barbara and her brother also worked with chimpanzees. Noted with Ringland's circus in 1957. By 1960 had branched out for herself, with a trained chimpanzee, working at children's matinees, etc. Showed her 'four educated chimps' in pantomime, at Exeter's Theatre Royal, 1960-61. At the Morecambe circus in 1961. Married first, about 1961 to the German, Carl Ruger, "Carl Heinz" and took her chimpanzee and dog act to the continent. Appeared with husband Carl Heinz at Joe Gandy's 'Circustime' at the Royalty Theatre, Chester in February 1962 with three chimpanzees. Appeared with the Boswell-Wilkie circus in SOuth Africa, from 1971 to 1973. Returned to Europe but parted from her husband. Returned to South Africa to marry Heino Weishoff, the circus electrician, then went to the Austrian Circus Elfi Althoff-Jacobi in 1975.
      IN 1976 too Chipperfield's elephants to the Circo Mariano in Portugal. In 1977 was in Ireland with the act, at Courtney's circus. IN 1978 joined Gerry Cottle's circus, rejoining her mother and father, helping her father train chimpanzees. Toured the world with Gerry Cottle and Dick CHipperfield. Her father died in 1980, Joined Chipperfield's circus in 1983. In 1984 joined Sally and Jim Clubb at "Amazing Animals" Heythrop Zoo, to look after the monkeys and small mammals. Her husband died in 1989. Barbara remained at Heythrop, working at James and Sally Clubb's zoo. Well-known in the British circus world and the animal TV and film business. Died 25th July 2000, aged 66, after suffering from cancer for some time. The funeral was at Oxford Crematorium on 2nd August.
