Hello everyone. Two-thirds of 2024 gone. Seems like Christmas was just a few weeks ago!
We have a new web page!
Earlier this month, I was contacted by a gentleman named Kevin Keegan - no, not the footballer! This Kevin is a board member of the Dennis Historical Society (DHS) on Cape Cod and he was pointing out an error in the record of Captain Thomas Prince Howes on our site.
I'm 4,000 miles from my copy of the book, Howes Genealogy. So I can't tell the origin of the error but, anyway, Kevin told me that he had spotted the error because he was working on an article about the clipper ship, Southern Cross, which involved several people named Howes. He would send me a copy once it was published and, if we were interested, we could reprint it.
I found the article so fascinating that I've turned it into a web page here: https://howesfamilies.com/histories/Southern Cross.pdf. Our thanks go to Kevin and his fellow board members at DHS for granting us this privilege. I hope you enjoy it too.
John Howes, 1750-1833, clock maker and miniaturist
A recurring correspondent, named Stephen Giles, popped up again this month with some new information on one of his ancestors, John Howes. Some years ago, we had featured some of his research into John and his father, William, who was the Master of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers, one of the ancient guilds in the City of London.
Stephen wrote that he had found, sadly after the event, that there had been an exhibition at the Science Museum in London of some remarkable clocks from China, but made in Britain, some of which featured John's work as a miniaturist. Here is an article about the exhibition: https://issuu.com/accpublishinggroup/do ... il_2024/48.
Turn to the top left of page 50 for a description of the clock and John's work, which must have taken months. The same clock appears in this video at 2m 5s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbTtwFfwbB4
Stephen has also found a picture of another John Howes miniature on display in Switzerland:

There's an interesting story about this work which we may say more about at some point.
One of the two key learnings I have from this study is that nobody researches their family like a family member. Stephen's a good example!
Howes in the News
I'm not saying this was the only newsworthy item this month, but I did find it the most poignant. This was the 80th anniversary of the crash on a hillside above Cheltenham in Gloucestershire of a plane from the Royal Canadian Air Force piloted by Charles Maurice Howes. Charles had been born in England and had emigrated to Canada, only to return and die in wartime. A large group of dignitaries came to the site to recognize the event, including Charles's daughter. Not mentioned in the Saskatchewan newspaper article was that she had been born six months after the crash . . . ..

Our monthly progress
Despite my having sailed through much of the month, we've made quite a bit of progress. We added close to 650 people, finishing on 215,215 people. I'm still working, slowly, on the marriage project, having just started 1937.
We passed 45,000 people named Howes in our file this month. Here's a list of how many people there are with each of our main study names:
HOWES - 45,082
HOUSE - 31,886
HOWSE - 8,295
HOWZE - 1,302
HOWS - 743
HOWIS - 358
HOUZE - 213
Thank you for your support, folks
Paul
