Received with grateful thanks from great-granddaughter, Janet Rands:
Walter Howes and Ellen Howes Gell
A Mr and Mrs Moore living in a cottage near to a large prosperous foundry by the name of HOWES where Mr Moore was employed as a foreman opened their front door one morning in1866 to find a basket on the doorstep containing a baby boy. He was well dressed with a label attached to the basket that gave his name as Walter Howes and his date of birth.
The couple took him in and brought him up. They received an anonymous payment regularly to pay for the child. He was educated privately and turned out to be very bright. The Moores doted on him and spoilt him but as he grew up he became quite a wild person.
When he was still underage he courted and seduced a simple housemaid by the name of Alice Gell. Alice gave birth to a daughter whom she named Ellen. Walter did marry Alice but not until about a year later making Ellen illegitimate. She was ashamed of this for the rest of her life as in those days she could not take her fathers name even though Walter did insist his name be added to her birth certificate.
Ellen was a very pretty child and at first her father was very proud of her. He bought her a velvet coat and bonnet and sat her on his milk cart to show her off to his customers.
Walter had several crazy sorts of jobs, at one time he was a black faced minstrel on a boat called the 'Jenny Lynd' which sailed up and down the local river. The milk cart was another short lived occupation.
The family grew rapidly,Ellen had 5 brothers that lived and numerous other siblings who died at birth and at only months old.
The payments made to the Moores were diverted to Walter on leaving education but on his marriage to Alice stopped so this is when his numerous unsuccessful attempts at earning an income started. Walter took to drinking and when he was drunk he became violent. He blamed Ellen for his downfall and came to hate her. Each time Alice was confined Ellen would have to miss school to help. The school was just across the road so the teachers could see what was happening and Walter was sent to prison for a spell because of it. Thereafter he would get drunk more often and arrive home gunning for Ellen, he would chase her with an axe and shout 'where's that Rachael I'll murder her' he called her Rachael as he said she had Jewish looks. The neighbours would alert her mother and she would rush Ellen round to the next door where she would hide in their bed.
The house they occupied had only two bedrooms so at the age of 14 years old Ellen had to the home to her 5 brothers.
Ellen or Nellie as she became known had to leave the family home and support herself. She was close to her mother and always kept in touch but had no further contact with her father.
She met and married David Cutmore from Norwich. David was the son of another David Cutmore who owned a large Bakery. Ellen was 20 years old at the time of her marriage.
On the marriage certificate she is named as Ellen Gell and father deceased. Walter was still very much alive, her mother did not attend the wedding which took place in Yarmouth as it was kept secret from Walter so mother could not be missing for a day.
Eventually Alice procured a small house back in Norwich for the newly weds to set up home. In 1910 after two years of marriage their first child was born - a boy who they named David followed 2 years later by Edward then 2 years later by Marjorie.
On hearing of the birth of Ellen's third child Walter decided he wanted to make peace with his daughter he persuaded Alice to take him to visit Ellen, her husband and family.
Alice was very nervous about the meeting but it all went off quite well Walter behaved very well and caused David to say to Ellen ' I didn't know your father was a gentleman'
Who was his father?
At the beginning of the war in 1914 Walter Howes falsified his age by a few years and enlisted in the navy. He was lost when his ship the Clan Mcnaughton was sunk in the Western approaches in 1915. His name is on a memorial in Chatham Shipyard.
Ellen and David went on to have a further daughter Joan and another son Stanley.
Their second child Edward was my - Janet Rands - father. Walter my great grandfather.
