4075 His mother Susannah was described as a single woman. Richard was christened with his mother's surname of Thorn and as he retained this throughout his life, his father is perhaps unlikely to have been Robert Smallbrook whom Susannah married a few years later. Richard Thorn

4082 The statement (in the 1841 census) that he was not born in the county (Oxfordshire) is strange, but presumably an enumerator's error. Ann's parents William and Elizabeth Kirtland and her brother Thomas were living next door at this time. It is entirely possible that Richard Thorn was William Kirtland's apprentice. Richard Thorn

4099 There are two possibilities: abt Sep 1894, recorded age 50 (when he would have been 48) and abt Mar 1900, recorded age 52 (when he would have been 54). Evidence from the 1891 census suggest that "our" Thomas Thorne died in 1894 and the other one (younger by about 3 years and born in Keswick c1849) is the one that died in 1900. Thomas Thorn

4100 He was a scholar in 1851, a labourer in 1861, a police constable in 1871, a boot riveter in 1881 and a boot maker in 1891. The identity of his "niece" Anne Davis in 1871 / "daughter" Annie Thorne in 1881/91 has not been established. A William Thorne died age 47, in Wandsworth, London (reg district). William Thorn
